This post is published on my Wordpress site now. Check out the updated version here!
In this digital age, the accessibility of advanced language models like ChatGPT opens up new possibilities for interactive and engaging learning experiences. In this article, I shall share how we can leverage the capabilities of ChatGPT to generate 4 effective question types for Primary School English vocabulary practices that facilitate effective comprehension, retention, and application of knowledge (which could potentially have higher efficacy due to the level of personalisation).
The most important advantage from using ChatGPT is that it has access to a wide database of resources from the web to generate chunks of texts, passages that would take much longer if you were to create it from scratch on your own.
Secondly, the aspect of customisation is something that is worth considering, as I would consider ChatGPT as a supplement to learning/teaching, not something that will be able to completely replace available resources that students can have access to - which includes past year papers, or enrichment/assessment books that students can purchase.
That being said, let's delve into four question types and explore how they can enhance the learning process:

Why does this work? Because you can utilise the concept of spaced repetition (by revisiting the same vocabulary words that students might have more trouble understanding/retaining) and also encourage students to be able to consider how vocabulary words can be used in different sentences - having slightly different connotations, thereby aid in developing their linguistic flexibility.

While I am using this in the context of Primary School English Practices, I think this is a viable option that we can use for other academic subjects that could be more conceptual in nature - for example as a concept checklist for the sciences for students (or for teachers) to assess the conceptual understanding of certain topics and to be able to consistently reinforce the high-yield keywords that elucidate the main concepts.
One caveat, however, is that there is a need to fine-tune the difficulty of these AI-generated questions and answers, however, I believe that it can serve as a starting point for educators and students alike, especially if you wish to customise the passages to fit the words that are commonly used.

Definition Questions
Definition Questions prompt learners to provide accurate definitions or explanations of specific terms or concepts. This question type fosters a deep understanding of the subject matter, as it forces students to not only actively recall, but also to objectively test if they are able to grasp the meaning and context of key terms, and hopefully express the definitions in their own words instead of regurgitating dictionary definitions. It encourages critical thinking and the ability to articulate concepts concisely.
How I use definition questions to aid the learning of my students is by varying the type of questions used to achieve the same purpose.
For example:
Multiple Choice Definition Question
Which of the following best describes the concept of "preferential treatment"?

Read the following passage and explain the meaning of the bolded words.
As soon as the video went viral, the comments section was flooded with (1)malicious remarks. … (excerpt from a passage I generated from ChatGPT)
This can be done by asking ChatGPT to generate a passage using the words you have keyed in, bolding/emphasising the specific keywords that you have requested.
I find that using this method also trains students in their comprehension skills and to read between the lines (identify meaning of words based on how they were used in sentences/phrases), and can serve to build up student’s confidence in tackling open-ended questions of comprehension passages.
